A Sweet Beginning: The Conservancy’s History

In 2005, a 10-pound alligator left on a veterinary clinic doorstep sparked the beginning of something extraordinary. Exotic animal veterinarian Vicki Daldin Marsh and her husband Steve transformed their 23-acre property into a sanctuary, driven by their passion for animal welfare.

From this humble start, The Creature Conservancy has blossomed into a haven for rescued and rehomed animals, as sweet a story as any fairy tale.

During our visit, we had the pleasure of meeting the founder and head curator, Steve Marsh. We also spent hours talking to zookeeper, Alex.

Their enthusiasm for the animals and the conservancy’s mission was palpable.

As they shared the story of that first alligator and how it led to this remarkable sanctuary, we couldn’t help but feel inspired by the Marshes’ dedication and vision.

A Menagerie of Sweet Encounters

Whether you’re drawn to cuddly kangaroos, colorful chameleons, or powerful alligators, the Conservancy offers a smorgasbord of animal experiences to satisfy every palate. Open to the public on weekends, visitors can choose between self-guided exploration or guided tours.

During our visit, we opted for the self-guided tour and were impressed by the beautiful habitats built for the animals. We allowed ourselves four hours to tour the exhibits, watch presentations, and chat with volunteers and staff, and enjoyed every minute!

Pro tip: Plan to spend at least 2 hours fully savoring all the sweet animal encounters and educational programs.

Educational Programs: The Cherry on Top

Interactive wildlife presentations held throughout the day are the perfect topping to your visit.

We attended two of these engaging sessions during our visit, and they were a true highlight. The theme that month was Australia, featuring an Emu, a Blue-Tongue Skink, a Pink Bellied Side Neck Turtle, and a Dingo.

We learned fascinating details about how these animals came to the rescue, their natural habitats, and how they’ve thrived at the conservancy.

These presentations offer a wonderful opportunity to deepen your understanding of animal rescue and conservation efforts. They also offer a great opportunity to get up close to the animals.

Conservation: The Heart of the Matter

Most animals at the Conservancy are rescues, unable to return to the wild due to various circumstances. Other animals have been brought to the conservancy for educational purposes and a few came from other zoos.

By providing a forever home and partnering with scientists at the University of Michigan for research, the Conservancy plays a crucial role in animal welfare and conservation.

The passion for the animals in their care was truly impressive and heartwarming. It’s a testament to how sweet acts of kindness can make a real difference.
