Culinary Highlights: 5 Stops, 5 Flavors

Chicken and Waffles from Cedars in Covington, KY.

Cedar Restaurant: A Spicy Southern Kick

Our first stop was Cedar Restaurant, where we were treated to their signature Chicken and Waffles. This wasn’t your ordinary rendition of the classic Southern dish – it came with a twist that packed a punch.

Topped with spicy candied bacon and drizzled with Nashville hot honey syrup, this dish was a flavor explosion. My husband was in heaven, savoring every bite of the crispy chicken and fluffy waffles.

For me, the spice level was a bit overwhelming, but I could appreciate the quality and creativity of the dish. It’s definitely a must-try for those who can handle the heat!

Carnitas Taco from El Rincon Mexican Restaurant.

El Rincon Mexican Restaurant: Authentic Tacos and More

Next, we ventured into El Rincon Mexican Restaurant, where the aroma of authentic Mexican cuisine greeted us. We sampled both Carnita Tacos and Birria Tacos, accompanied by house-made tortilla chips and salsa.

The star of the show was undoubtedly the Birria taco, served with a rich, flavorful dipping sauce that elevated the experience. Unlike our previous stop, these tacos were mild enough for me to fully enjoy.

The freshness of the ingredients shone through, and the hand-made tortillas were a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to authenticity.

Meatball Pizza from Macs Pub on the Mainstrasse Village Food Tour.

Mac’s Pizza: Spicy Pie Perfection

Mac’s Pizza brought us a Spicy Meatball Pizza that was a hit with the group. The crust was the perfect balance of crispy and chewy – a solid foundation for the flavorful toppings.

The sauce and meatballs packed a spicy punch that my husband loved, though it was a bit intense for my palate. What really stood out was the generous layer of gooey, stretchy cheese that blanketed the pizza.

Even though the spice level was high for me, I couldn’t help but appreciate the quality and thoughtfulness put into this pizza.

Soft pretzel sticks from Cock & Bull Public House.

Cock & Bull Public House: Pretzel Paradise

The Cock & Bull Public House offered what turned out to be my personal favorite of the tour: Fried Soft Pretzel Sticks served with Beer Cheese. These pretzels were a textural delight – crispy on the outside yet wonderfully soft and fluffy within.

The flavor was spot-on, with just the right amount of salt to enhance the pretzel’s natural taste. The accompanying beer cheese had a spicy kick to it, adding an extra layer of flavor for those who enjoy a bit of heat.

This stop was a reminder of how sometimes the simplest foods, when done right, can be the most satisfying.

Note: You are also able to sample a glass of cold beer or cider. We do not drink alcohol and did not partake but the others in our group seemed to really enjoy their cold beverages.

Soft serve ice cream from Piper's Cafe in Mainstrasse Village.

Sweet Finale: A Soft Serve Showdown

Our tour concluded on a sweet note with a stop for soft-serve ice cream. I opted for a swirl of vanilla soft serve flavored with banana and topped with Reese’s cups. Jim chose French vanilla topped with dark chocolate sauce.

The ice cream was refreshingly light, providing a welcome contrast to the savory (and spicy) foods we’d enjoyed earlier. While the banana flavoring was a bit too intense for my liking, the Reese’s cups added a nice texture and flavor balance.

My husband’s French vanilla with dark chocolate was the clear winner for both of us – a classic combination executed perfectly. It was a delightful way to end our culinary journey.
