Solar eclipse detour leads to a delightful discovery!
Our quest for a prime view of the solar eclipse on April 8th, 2024, took us north of Dayton, Ohio. With rumbling stomachs, we detoured to Arcanum for snacks. We planned to continue onto Greenville but we heard it was already overflowing with tourists, so we decided to explore Brumbaugh Fruit and Fun Farm instead.
Little did we know, this happy twist of fate would lead us to the Farmer’s Daughter Bakery, a haven of fresh-baked delights! Not only did we fuel up on delicious pastries, but we also witnessed the awe-inspiring eclipse unfolding right there in the farm fields.
It turned out to be a day filled with unexpected treats, both celestial and culinary!
A Harvest of Apple Desserts
Prepare for a delightful dilemma. Their display case overflows with fresh-baked goodies, making every choice a tough one. We fell for their apple fritters, turnovers, and pie – all bursting with orchard-fresh apples that tasted like sunshine, even in April.
The apple pie? Perfection. A flaky crust cradles perfectly balanced sweet-tart apples, topped with a delicate crumb. It’s honestly one of the best apple pies we’ve ever had. We’d happily make the hour-long drive just for another slice (or maybe the whole pie!).
The secret? A phenomenal crust (we couldn’t pinpoint the fat – butter, lard, or shortening? It doesn’t matter!), allowing the fresh apples to shine.
But the apple fritters and turnovers deserve a shout-out too. The fritters are fluffy with a hint of crispness on the edges, glazed to sweet perfection. The warm spices and tart apples create a symphony in your mouth.

Fall is the perfect time to drive out to the farm to enjoy fun for the whole family. Your kids can burn off steam playing in Grandpa’s Fun Acre, climbing up and sliding down the Monster Mountain, getting lost in the Kinda Kooky Korn Maze, burrowing through Rug Rat Tunnels, and more. Everyone can enjoy the hayrides and Halloween activities too.
I can’t wait to return to taste their freshly pressed apple cider.
